The Adventures of Captain Underpants Read Along!

June 2, 2017 ashley donati

We are gearing up to go to the official Captain Underpants movie that opened today in theaters by reading to first book in the Adventures of Captain Underpants series.  We have tickets to see the movie tomorrow!  My very own Captain Fourth Grader is super pumped.  Let's get into it . . .

In the last chapters, we find Harold and George have their school principal under their thumb, and he doesn't even know it!  The book ends in a classic comedy style - a return to status quo and a set up for the next book of adventures.  Harold and George go back to pulling pranks on their classmates and creating comic books to sell at recess.  Their principal, well, almost goes back to a normal life, except for those times Harold and George could snap their fingers and change him into that tighty-whitey wearing super hero!

What My Captain Fourth Grader said:  Loved the book and ready to go to the book store to buy the next one!  Tomorrow we get to see the movie and get a giant bucket of popcorn!  Yay!

The Adventures of Captain Underpants Read Along

June 1, 2017 ashley donati

Welcome back to the next installation of our read along of The Adventures of Captain Underpants book as we gear up for the new movie version of the book coming out on June 2nd!

So . . . I had planned to write this post on Saturday, but Mother Nature had other plans.  Our city experienced a "hurricane-like" storm that knocked out power for most city residents for almost a week!  It was intense, and we are lucky to have our house in one piece.  So many neighbors had trees fall and damage their homes.  The electricity is back on now, and I once again have access to civilization! Anywho . . . back to the underpants!

Today we are discussing chapters eight through fifteen.  And what a hilarious, zany eight chapters it was!! The boys must pay for their prankster crimes, and the principal is out to get them.  They hatch a plot to hypnotize the principal to escape his punishment.  To everyone's surprise, their plan works!  Every time they snap their fingers, their mean principal thinks that he is Captain Underpants!  Captain Underpants who is really their principal runs through the town looking to do what superheroes do best - save people!  He finds a bank being robbed, and when the bank robbers see him standing their in his underwear and a cape, they laugh so hard that they can't get it together to rob the bank.  At the end of this section, we meet Dr. Diaper, Captain Underpants life long nemesis.

What my Captain Fourth Grader thought: nonstop laughs!  Big, deep, belly laughs the whole time we read together.  Also, he says that he relates to Harold because they both have crazy hair.  We went to the movie theater last week to see the new Diary of A Wimpy Kid movie, and while we were there, he spotted the poster for the Captain Underpants movie, and it got him really excited to go home and read more.

The Adventures of Captain Underpants Read Along!

Welcome to our The Adventures of Captain Underpants Read Along! We are gearing up for the new Captain Underpants movie coming to theaters on June 2 by reading the first in the book series.  The main characters, boys George Beard and Harold Hutchins, are fourth graders, and I have my own fourth grade son to read this along with.  Here we go!

Chapters 1-7

We read the first seven chapters, and the reading goes really quick because each page is illustrated.  This is a really quick and fun read!

This story is about two fourth grade boys - George and Harold.

"George and Harold were usually responsible kids.  Whenever anything bad happened, George and Harold were usually responsible."

The boys loved two things: pulling silly pranks and creating comic books about the super hero they have created - Captain Underpants.  Every time they write and illustrate a new comic book starring Captain Underpants, they sneak into the school office when the school secretary isnt' looking and make copies of their comic to sell to their friends at recess.  George and Harold loved to play silly jokes on their friends and school mates.  One of their jokes goes too far, and they find themselves in big trouble with their school principal.  By the end of chapter seven, we find the boys in big trouble, and their mean principal is planning to blackmail them into behaving and playing no more pranks at school. What are they going to do?!

Me: This is a fun start to a kid's novel.  It's part novel part graphic novel, and I like how easy it is to read and get engaged with the story.

Captain Fourth Grader: I love the pictures!  I like how the boys are pranksters.  Their jokes are really funny.

Join us again on Saturday for the next section of the read along!

Captain Underpants Giveaway!

May 19, 2017 ashley donati

We've got our popcorn ready for the Captain Underpants movie coming to theaters on June 2!  I'm giving away a Captain Underpants prize pack provided by Scholastic.  If you would like to enter to win, head over to my Instagram account, Booktomato Kids Books.

In this series, fourth graders George Beard and Harold Hutchins are best friends that love to play jokes on their classmates and create their own comics.  They created a super hero, Captain Underpants, and their comic books are filled with his adventures. We love the silly, wacky humor in the Captain Underpants series by Dav Pilkey.  I love this book series for its age-appropriate jokes.  My fourth grader loves this series for its lovable characters and awesome adventures. This series would make for really fun summer reading for ages 7-11.

To celebrate the upcoming movie, my very own fourth grader and I will be doing a read-along.  We will be reading the first book together, The Adventures of Captain Underpants Book 1, and then coming onto the blog to discuss what we think about it.  Join along if you would like!  We are starting Monday.

Here is the movie trailer for the movie!  It looks like so much fun!
